Red Hot Chili Peppers? New-ish album? Goes without saying that it gets a double thumbs up and a big Wallace & Gromit cheesy grin from yours truly. ‘kin luv these guys! (In an awe-inspired, Wayne’s World, we’re not worthy sense).
It’s sometimes kind of a bummer when the line-up of such a close-knit band as RHCP has to change. I’m a creature of habit and I know what I like…OK? Plus, I must say that the Anthony Kiedis, Flea, John Frusciante, Chad Smith line-up was my favorite. But I guess Frusciante’s got his solo career to further and replacement guitarist Josh Klinghoffer slots in quite nicely IMHO.
Klinghoffer actually overlapped with Frusciante; joining the full line-up on the final few legs of the Stadium Arcadium tour; providing additional guitar, backing vocal and keyboard contributions. Plus he made contributions to John’s solo projects and they even collaborated on a joint album together (A Sphere In The Heart Of Silence). So transition-wise…it’s all amicable.
I’m happy to find the guys as close-knit as ever. (Phew). The driving Funk/Rock base laid by Flea & Smith, (God I missed these guys), coupled with the equally distinctive Kiedis Rock/Rap vocals immediately place the listener in familiar territory. Nice thing about having Klinghoffer along for the ride tho’, is that a change in gear guitar-wise takes the lads in a subtly different direction sonically. (Not least ‘cos Josh also brings keyboard, vocal and composing contributions to the mix).
Each track is ‘kin masterpiece man! Tho’ my favorite track (so far) has to be Factory of Faith. Foot tapping, finger drumming, head bopping start by Flea & Chad; Anthony joining in with his unique rap/melodic vocal mix; Josh more laid back but weaving in and out with various sonic threads. Or I guess I could’ve just said “wow”! But in truth, each of I’m With You‘s 14 tracks ‘kin rocks. So I feel kinda guilty selecting one track as favorite; kinda like I would picking one of my kids as favorite. But WTF…;o)
Sh1t The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie just came around again! S’OK if I change my mind? Or maybe I should sign off and zip it, before the next track kicks in? Seriously, go grab a copy. I defy anyone to not sing, not drum, not tap and not boogie along.
